And tonight sees the season finale of LA LA LAND on Showtime's SHO Next -

"As six weeks in LA come to an end, Brendan focuses on the custody battle of his estranged son Jack; Shirley attempts to rid himself of the dead celebrity spirits that have controlled his life since he was a child; and Gary is set to collaborate on a short-film with a cult film director. The stakes for each of them have never been higher, but nothing goes quite according to plan. Desperate for cash to pay his attorney’s fees, Brendan takes his first paying job in LA filming an interview with 1980's TV star Alan Thicke – however it’s not long before the police are called. In Glendale, Shirley's exorcism gets out of control when the spirits of Princess Diana and Colonel Sanders refuse to leave his body. And back in central LA, Gary and the director are soon arguing about whether they should pursue Gary's plan to speculate the production budget on lottery scratch-cards. By the end of this tumultuous day, Gary, Shirley and Brendan's lives have changed forever." from Showtime - click HERE to visit the site.

The Royal Shakespeare Company have added Production photos of Marc as Bottom to the RSC official site - click HERE to view.

London Evening Standard 5*

Most delightful are the so-called rude mechanicals. Their dreadful festive play about Pyramus and Thisbe is performed in a spirit of wondrously inept excess. Marc Wootton is superb as Bottom, the weaver who proves himself an awful ham, while there's a lovely depth of feeling in Felix Hayes's Snug. "

The Telegraph - 5 *:

"There is some fabulous fun and frolics in the forest in the RSC's most recent production of A Midsummer Night's Dream."

"...The mechanicals are terrific, generating a warm sense of male friendship, and the great moment when Bottom – a splendidly bumptious but lovable Marc Wootton – returns from his forest adventures proves deeply affecting. The actual performance of their terrible play is as inventively funny as any I have seen, a glorious celebration of bombastic overacting and theatrical incompetence that becomes surprisingly touching when Bottom and Michael Grady-Hall’s sweetly innocent Francis Flute discover that they really enjoy kissing each other as Pyramus and Thisbe."

"I liked the so-called Mechanicals – the amateur actors (here in boiler suits and tool belts) led by Marc Wootton’s roly poly Bottom who makes a lovely ass of himself.
His wig transforms into donkey ears and the salami dangling between his legs clearly delights a svelte Titania (the excellent Pippa Nixon). "

Next Friday (July 29th) is Marc's Opening night - read Lizz Brain's recent interview with Marc on his upcoming Royal Shakespeare Company debut - Huge thanks to Lizz.

Comedian Marc Wootton makes his RSC debut this summer. He tells Lizz Brain about, well... his Bottom

Marc Wootton phones. "Hello?," he says. "Did you have a nice Christmas? What did you get?" It's a strange opening to an interview in July about joining the Royal Shakespeare Company to take on a lead role in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

But then, he's a funny guy and his interesting phone manner does at least break the ice.

He is best known for his TV work in the likes of Channel 4's The Eleven O'Clock Show and My New Best Friend, but after appearing in Ayckbourn's Seasons Greetings at the National Theatre, alongside Catherine Tate, he was asked to meet director Nancy Meckler about working with the RSC.

"You're supposed to do things which scare you, aren't you?" he reasons. "You're supposed to feel the fear and exercise those muscles, and this is scary in that we're doing a play which has existed for hundreds of years and we want to do justice to it.

"The fright mechanism leaves you either wanting to punch someone or run away crying, but being a performer, you put yourself through it.

"I do feel very honoured, though, and without wishing to sound corny, it's a great journey to be on. Please don't use that, it sounds awful. Make me sound clever or something."

Marc has already become a fan, and a part, of the giant cog of the RSC.

"They're brilliant, they have everything. Groups of people who can help. I've had workshops on the language which really made sense of it, the schedulers are incredible who just make everything work time-wise, everyone is so nice from Michael Boyd down.

"I just can't find fault, and I'm the kind of person who would!"

But what about his Bottom?

"He's one of those deluded guys who means well but desperately wants to impress his mates.

"He wants to be loved and is doing all he can to be the greatest actor in the world ever, but falls horribly short.

"The more deluded a person is, the funnier they are. There's nothing funnier than watching someone who thinks they're brilliant at something when they're actually terrible.

"But there's also a charm about them, because they live in blissful ignorance, and that can be quite childlike and naïve; endearing really.

"So to get all that across and make an audience have sympathy for Bottom is quite a challenge, but it's interesting work.

"I'm a real believer in seeing what comes up, and I'm doing this until November so I'll learn all I can, enjoy it and then see what happens.

"I've got to go to New York to finish writing a comedy show, and to St Petersburg to finish a film. Then it will be Christmas."

A Midsummer Night's Dream is at the RSC, Stratford, from July 29 to November 5. Phone 0844 800 1110.
